It’s your story. So it should be your book, too…

How Our Publishing Model Works:

Transparent from the Start

We’re not a traditional publishing company, which operates on an advance model that can indebt authors before the first word is written. We’re transparent about the costs each step of the way. You choose the individual services you want, from recipe development to printing.

Shorter Production Time

Because of our relationships with small print houses, we can help you create and print your book within 12 months, whereas traditional publishers may require two to three years. We can help you determine the right number of books to print for your anticipated sales, and tailor your order appropriately. Also, our printers are based in America, so there’s no lengthy overseas shipping times; turn-time is weeks, not months.

A La Carte Services

Only pay for what you truly need. If you’re starting from square one, we can pair you with experienced recipe developers, testers, editors, photographers, and stylists. If you already have these assets, our design, printing, and production resources can help bring your book to life. Available services include:

Strong Relationships with Collaborators

Mise En Place knows that business success depends on relationships. During our years in the publishing and public relations industries, we have been fortunate to work with some of the best and the brightest talent in the culinary and lifestyle fields. We can connect you with the most strategic and effective partners, depending on your publishing and budgetary needs.

Retain Control of the Process, the Rights, and the Profits

You have control of each phase of your project, and the work belongs to you, not us—another key difference from traditional publishers. That means you can start pre-sales whenever you want, helping offset printing and production costs. It also means you know exactly how many books are selling. In traditional publishing, even for James Beard award-winning books, many authors may never know the amount of books sold and the 1-5% of the sales they may receive.

Effective Local Distribution

Most books are purchased because the buyer knows the seller—whether directly, by experiencing the author’s food in a restaurant, or indirectly, through a personal recommendation. Our distribution model leverages that strength by helping you sell the majority of your books within your local region. You control the primary sales and distribution of your book directly through your restaurant or business, bringing in an additional revenue stream. We can help supplement those sales through publicity, events, and relationships with local retailers.
